Construction of a 47,315㎡ Building Planned... Groundbreaking Scheduled for Next Year
The construction of the new city hall in Pyeongtaek-si, Gyeonggi-do is entering the main phase. As the administrative procedures for the construction have been completed, the city plans to start construction next year after an international design competition.

Pyeongtaek-si announced on the 28th that it has officially embarked on the construction of the new city hall by selecting a management service company for the international design competition for the new administrative town on the 24th.
The new administrative town of Pyeongtaek-si will be located in the area of 2521-2522 Godeok-dong within the Godeok Internationalization Planning District. The city hall and city council will be built on a site of 83,521㎡ with a total floor area of 47,315㎡, with a budget of 338 billion KRW invested. The city hall will be constructed with one basement floor and nine above-ground floors, and the city council will have four above-ground floors.
The city is promoting the project in the form of an international design competition to establish the administrative town as a regional landmark. Through a separate evaluation, the Korea Institute of Architects was selected as the management service company for the design competition.
Following the selection of the service company, the city plans to conduct the international design competition in August as scheduled, begin design within the year, and start construction of the new city hall next year.
Jung Jang-seon, mayor of Pyeongtaek-si, said, "The construction of the new administrative town is a century-long project for Pyeongtaek, so we plan to derive a high-quality design through an international competition," adding, "We will make every effort to ensure that the administrative town construction project proceeds without any setbacks."
Pyeongtaek-si’s push for the new administrative town dates back to 2019. After conducting a basic construction plan service that year, in July 2021, the city requested a feasibility study on the administrative town construction plan from the Local Investment Project Management Center (LIMAC) of the Korea Institute of Public Administration. In October 2022, the administrative town promotion team was formed, and after passing the local finance investment review by Gyeonggi-do in May last year, the land purchase contract was completed in December of the same year.
Meanwhile, the existing Pyeongtaek City Hall in Bijeon-dong was completed in 1993. After the integration of three cities and counties in 1995, an annex building was added and is currently in use, but the building is old and cramped, causing some departments to rent offices externally for work, which has caused inconvenience to civil petitioners.
However, concerns remain that relocating Pyeongtaek City Hall to the Godeok district could deepen the hollowing out of the old downtown area. With the development of the Godeok district as well as the Jije Station area public housing district, the population outflow from the old downtown is expected to accelerate.
