Gangnam-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) held a traditional hand rice planting experience event on the morning of the 27th at the rice farming learning center near Yeongdong 4 Bridge on Yangjaecheon Stream.
About 200 participants, including daycare children, elementary school students, and residents taking part in the Yangjaecheon ecological learning program called Little Farmer School, planted rice seedlings themselves in a 1,410㎡ paddy field with seedling rows set up. The rice planted that day will be harvested in the fall and sent to local social welfare organizations. A traditional autumn harvest experience event will also be held during the rice harvest.
Various side events recreating traditional rural scenes were also held that day. Before the rice planting, a lively performance by a samulnori troupe energized the atmosphere, and after the planting was completed, traditional games such as hoop rolling, tuho throwing, and twisted straw rope jumping were experienced.
District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong said, “I hope this will be an opportunity for children living in the city to experience the fading rural culture and appreciate the value of harvest,” adding, “We will take good care of the planted seedlings and nurture them into strong rice plants so that everyone can enjoy the joy of the autumn harvest.”
