An eco-tourism area is a region with environmental conservation value where people can experience and learn about the importance of ecosystem protection. The Ministry of Environment designates these areas through document and on-site evaluations, and re-designates them every three years based on operational assessments.

Yeongyang County first received the designation of 'Yeongyang Night Sky and Firefly Park' as an eco-tourism area in 2018, covering the Ecological Landscape Conservation Area, Firefly Special Zone, and Night Sky Protected Park in Subimyeon. After being re-designated in 2021, it has now achieved the distinction of being re-designated as an eco-tourism area for the second consecutive time this year.

With this re-designation, Yeongyang County will continue to receive national funding to develop eco-tourism programs, foster resident councils, train local guides, and promote its excellent ecological resources.

County Governor Oh Dochang stated, "Yeongyang Night Sky and Firefly Park boasts outstanding ecological resources, and with nearby eco-trails, the Firefly Observatory, and birch forests, it is a place where visitors can experience diverse eco-tourism opportunities."
