A man who won a $100,000 (approximately 136.7 million KRW) lottery prize in the United States shared the winnings equally with his friend. It was due to a promise they made in the past. Local netizens are praising the man who chose friendship over money.
On the 22nd (local time), the North Carolina Education Lottery Commission announced on its official website that a local man named Curtis Hudson had won a $100,000 lottery prize.
The North Carolina Education Lottery was established in 2005 under the state's "Lottery Act." Half of the total revenue is paid out as prizes, while the other half is reinvested in lottery operations and local education funds.
The lottery ticket Hudson purchased was the "Diamond Deluxe Ticket," which offers a maximum prize of $2 million (approximately 2.7 billion KRW). He bought the ticket in southern Main Street, Laurinburg, Scotland County, where he resides, and won a total prize of $100,000.
Upon hearing the news of his win, Hudson decided without hesitation to split the amount equally with his friend Walter Bond. When the commission asked for the reason, Hudson explained, "We made a promise that if either of us ever won a big prize, we would definitely split it in half," adding, "We are both men who always keep our promises."
Eventually, the two friends were invited together to the lottery commission headquarters to receive their winnings. Each received $50,000 (approximately 68.35 million KRW), and after federal and state taxes, each took home $35,753 (approximately 48.87 million KRW). Hudson plans to spend his winnings on home interior renovations, while Bond intends to save his share.
The two longtime friends have also purchased lottery tickets as a hobby in the past. Hudson shared his secret to winning, saying, "I buy tickets when I have a feeling that something good is going to happen."
Meanwhile, the Diamond Deluxe Ticket that Hudson won was first introduced in December last year. This ticket selects a total of 12 winners, with 4 receiving $2 million and 8 receiving $100,000. There are currently 3 remaining $2 million winners and 4 remaining $100,000 winners. The North Carolina Department of Education plans to allocate approximately $1.6 million (about 2.1 billion KRW) from the lottery sales to school facility repair programs.
