Twenty Korean players are challenging for the title at this year's US Women's Open.
The United States Golf Association (USGA), which hosts the tournament, announced on the 26th (local time) that "20 Korean players are registered to compete in the 79th US Women's Open this year." A total of 156 players will compete for the championship over four days starting from the 30th at Lancaster Country Club in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA. Ali International has joined as a new sponsor, increasing the total prize money by 1 million dollars from last year to 12 million dollars (approximately 16.4 billion KRW).
Among the participants are Jeon In-ji, the 2015 US Women's Open champion held at the same venue, 2019 champion Lee Jeong-eun 6, 2020 champion Kim A-rim, Ko Jin-young, Kim Se-young, Yang Hee-young, Kim Hyo-joo, Yoo Hae-ran, Choi Hye-jin, Lee Mi-hyang, Shin Ji-eun, Lim Jin-hee, and Lee So-mi. Shin Ji-ae, who is active on the Japan Ladies Professional Golf Association (JLPGA) Tour, earned her spot by finishing as runner-up in last year's tournament. Korean Ladies Professional Golf Association (KLPGA) Tour players Park Hyun-kyung, Kim Min-byeol, and Kim Su-ji are also participating.
Players who earned their spots through qualifying tournaments include An Na-rin, Jeon Ji-won, and Joo Soo-bin. The USGA selected additional participants through regional first-stage qualifiers and second-stage qualifiers held in the United States, Canada, Japan, and Germany from the 15th to the 20th of last month. Amateurs with a handicap of 2.4 or lower were also eligible to apply. This year, there were 1,897 applicants from 46 US states and 39 countries overseas, making it the second-highest number of applicants in history, following last year.
