Democratic Party Euljiro Committee Holds Meeting with Jeonse Fraud Victims
Democrats "Relief First" VS Government "Fund Loss"
Woo Won-sik "Jeonse Fraud Damage Is a Clear Disaster"
The Democratic Party's Euljiro Committee met with victims of jeonse fraud to emphasize the necessity of amending the Jeonse Fraud Special Act.
On the morning of the 27th, the Democratic Party's Euljiro Committee held a 'Meeting with Jeonse Fraud Victim Groups to Pass the Amendment to the Jeonse Fraud Special Act' at the National Assembly, urging the passage of the amendment in the plenary session. Park Ju-min, chairman of the Euljiro Committee, stated, "If the People Power Party and the Yoon administration had even once listened to the voices of the victims or visited the sites to hear their difficulties, they would have fully understood the necessity of the bill scheduled for passage tomorrow." He urged, "If President Yoon intends to exercise his veto power, please abandon that thought." He continued, "They are spreading false information as if the amendment will require enormous financial resources," adding, "Wasn't it originally agreed to revise it every six months?"
Woo Won-sik, a candidate for Speaker of the National Assembly, attended the meeting and said, "The current special law clearly has blind spots and definite limitations," emphasizing, "If the amendment is not passed in the plenary session tomorrow (the 28th), President Yoon Seok-yeol and the People Power Party will go beyond being mere bystanders to the economic disaster of jeonse fraud and become accomplices who have facilitated the spread of harm."
The amendment to the Jeonse Fraud Special Act centers on a 'pay first, recover later' approach, aiming for prompt support to victims. It is an amendment proposed by the Democratic Party in response to criticisms that the special law enacted last year lacks effectiveness. On the 2nd of this month, the bill was passed in the plenary session with 176 votes in favor, 90 against, and 2 invalid votes, and it will be submitted to the plenary session on the afternoon of the 28th. Although the amendment can be passed solely with the votes of Democratic Party lawmakers, they are requesting the participation of the People Power Party due to concerns over the president's potential veto and other issues.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport maintains its opposition to the 'pay first, recover later' provision included in the amendment. Before the plenary session opens, the ministry announced it would submit a government proposal excluding this provision, predicting last-minute conflicts between the Democratic Party and the government and ruling party.
