Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeong Wono) has signed agreements with local non-profit corporations and organizations selected for the 'Seongdong-type Single-Person Household Support Public Contest Project' and will actively promote various support projects for single-person households until November.
The single-person household support public contest project went through the contest procedures including announcement and application from February to March this year, project briefing sessions, and evaluations, resulting in the final selection of 15 projects from 14 organizations in April.
The final selected projects include ▲Organizing and storage support for middle-aged single-person households, dispatching with the community! ▲'Relationship Formation Sports Project' for single-person households in Seongdong-gu ▲'Smart Green Home Project' for improving housing environments for low-income elderly living alone ▲'Digital Literacy Support Project' to enhance cognitive abilities of elderly single-person households, among others. These customized projects cover safety (security), housing, health, culture and leisure, and middle-aged specialized fields for single-person households.
As of May 2024, single-person households in Seongdong-gu number 59,250 households (44.4% of the total), accounting for nearly half of all households. Accordingly, Seongdong-gu has been continuously supporting single-person households by implementing public contest projects since 2022 to reflect the diverse needs and requirements of single-person households and to provide practical support for a healthy and happy life. Last year, 16 organizations participated and promoted 18 projects for single-person households across various age groups including youth, middle-aged, and elderly.
In addition to the public contest projects, Seongdong-gu operates programs at the Seongdong-gu Single-Person Household Support Center to help single-person households live balanced and healthy lives by promoting physical health, mental health recovery, and relationship health formation. From June 10, applications for the second half of the year’s programs will be accepted through the Single-Person Household Support Center’s website, with some programs accepting applications on an ongoing basis. Detailed information is available on the center’s website.
Furthermore, promotional materials such as lifestyle guidebooks providing various information applicable to single-person household policies and daily life will be produced and placed at community service centers, the Single-Person Household Support Center, youth centers, and other related institutions. These materials will also be distributed to single-person households moving into Seongdong-gu to ensure no blind spots exist where benefits are missed due to limited access to information.
Jeong Wono, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, stated, “Due to changes in social and economic conditions and values, the number of single-person households in Seongdong-gu continues to increase, and the demand for policies is also diversifying, requiring tailored policies by gender and age. Through the single-person household support public contest projects and the operation of the Seongdong-gu Single-Person Household Support Center, we will actively discover and promote demand-oriented projects to realize Seongdong as an inclusive city where everyone, including single-person households, can be happy.”
