Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced on the 24th that it has signed an agreement with a local Air Force unit to mutually open sports facilities in order to expand public sports facilities.

This initiative was promoted to respond to the increasing interest of residents in sports activities, meet the demand for community sports, and alleviate reservation competition caused by the shortage of sports facilities.

According to the agreement, the Air Force unit will strive to ensure residents can smoothly use the sports facilities within the scope of the opening, while the district will promote the usage methods of the sports facilities and the military base entry procedures to residents and notify the list of advance reservations for smooth facility use.

The facilities to be opened are two tennis courts and a playground (parade ground) within the Air Force 3rd Missile Defense Brigade (Commander Moon O-seon).

The tennis courts will be open every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday) for two months starting in June, and from August, they will be open every weekend (Saturday and Sunday). Opening hours are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The playground will be opened after facility maintenance such as fences for base security, with opening days and hours matching those of the tennis courts.

A district official said, “Although it was difficult to open the military base due to security facilities, the Air Force unit empathized with residents' desire to secure community sports facilities and was able to open the tennis courts and playground.”

The district also plans to open the gymnasium within the Geumnarae Culture and Sports Center to Air Force personnel to boost morale and improve sports welfare. Detailed opening contents and schedules will be decided after consultation with related organizations.

Additionally, the district is promoting a project to open school sports facilities with good accessibility in cooperation with schools to secure insufficient community sports facilities.

Geumcheon-gu Mayor Yu Seong-hoon said, “We are pleased to secure a foundation for community sports facilities through the opening of military base sports facilities,” and added, “We will continue to expand the opening of sports facilities through cooperation with related local organizations to enhance public sports facilities.”
