Holding a Meeting with Related Agencies on Landslide Prevention
Discussion on Cooperation Measures Including Case Sharing and Technical Support
Jeonnam Province, city and county governments, and related organizations gathered in one place to brainstorm on improving prevention and response capabilities for landslides during the summer season.
According to Jeonnam Province on the 24th, a landslide stakeholders meeting was held over two days starting the previous day at the BoSeong Jeamsan Recreation Forest area.
More than 50 participants attended, including representatives from Jeonnam Province, city and county governments, the Korea Forest Engineering Association, and the Korea Forestry Cooperative Federation. The meeting was held to enhance the work capabilities of city and county employees before the official start of the rainy season and to strengthen cooperation systems with related organizations.
Each organization presented comprehensive 2024 landslide prevention and response measures and best practices. They also shared cases of the ‘Proactive Resident Evacuation Drill,’ conducted jointly by related organizations such as the police, fire department, and forestry cooperatives during the landslide disaster preparedness training week (April 8?26) held this year.
To strengthen the work capabilities of those in charge of erosion control projects, education on improving the design and construction quality of erosion control projects was conducted by forest engineer Oh Jeom-gon.
Following this, cooperation plans for manpower, equipment, and technical support were discussed with the Korea Forest Engineering Association and regional forestry cooperatives to enable rapid damage assessment and emergency restoration in the event of landslides.
The regional forestry cooperatives proposed regular monitoring and emergency measures focused on forest facility areas such as erosion control facilities and forest roads, while the Korea Forest Engineering Association suggested technical support cooperation regarding cause investigations and emergency restoration plans for landslide sites.
Additionally, a site visit was conducted to locations with various erosion control facilities, where education on erosion control technologies, methods, and material selection was provided to enhance the on-site response capabilities of city and county officials.
Kang Shin-hee, Director of the Forest Resources Division of Jeonnam Province, stated, “Since this summer is expected to have rainfall amounts similar to or greater than average, we will thoroughly prevent and respond to landslide-prone areas to protect the safety of residents.”
Meanwhile, Jeonnam Province conducted safety inspections in March on 2,281 landslide-prone areas and 1,067 artificially developed sites in preparation for concentrated summer heavy rains, resulting in corrective measures for 415 locations. May has also been designated as the ‘Month for Pre-Disaster Preparedness,’ with thorough safety inspections underway.
A ‘Proactive Resident Evacuation System’ has been established for 8,929 residents (6,487 households) living in landslide-prone areas. Following landslide forecasts during the record-breaking heavy rains on May 5?6, 108 residents living in vulnerable areas were proactively evacuated.
During the natural disaster response period, which lasts until October 15, Jeonnam Province will operate the landslide response situation room 24 hours a day, closely monitoring weather alerts and landslide prediction information to make every effort for proactive resident evacuation.
