Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Holds 'Siheung City Metropolitan Transportation Improvement Meeting'
"Completion of 6 Focused Investment Projects Shortened by up to 15 Months"
The government will advance the start of four road projects by more than a year to enable 'transportation first, then occupancy' in the Geomo District of Siheung City, Gyeonggi Province, where land development is currently underway. In the Eungye District within the city, the long-delayed expansion projects for National Road No. 42 and Mayu-ro will be promptly promoted.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Metropolitan Area Wide-area Transportation Committee (DAEGANGWI) announced on the 24th at the 'Siheung City Metropolitan Transportation Improvement Meeting' that it plans to shorten the completion time of six concentrated investment projects underway in the Siheung area by up to 15 months.
The meeting was held as a follow-up measure to promote the 32 concentrated investment projects in the metropolitan area announced at the '6th Public Livelihood Discussion' in January. Chairman Kang Hee-eop of DAEGANGWI, Mayor Lim Byung-taek of Siheung, and representatives of Siheung residents attended.
DAEGANGWI will first start construction in 2026 on the 'National Road No. 39 Connecting Road' passing through Siheung City and Ansan City among the four projects in the Geomo District, aiming for completion in 2029. The start of construction, originally scheduled for after 2027, will be advanced to shorten the total completion time by 15 months. This project is being promoted under DAEGANGWI's mediation plan due to previous disagreements between the Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) and local governments over the route passing near a military base.
The expansion of Gunja-ro and Jukyul-ro, and the new construction and expansion of Bonghwa-ro to Gunja-ro will proceed with compensation and construction simultaneously to shorten the project period. These projects also aim to start in 2026, more than a year earlier than originally planned, and complete in 2029. The total project duration is expected to be reduced by 12 months. Upon completion, it is expected to resolve bottlenecks in the major congestion section on the northwest side of Geomo District (Gunja-ro) and improve the level of traffic service from E to D.
In the Eungye District, the expansion of major arterial roads on the east side, including National Road No. 42 and Mayu-ro (a total extension of 3.7 km), from four lanes to six lanes will be accelerated. These two projects have been significantly delayed in the Eungye District, where occupancy began in 2017. The originally planned 'National Road No. 42 Bypass Connecting Road Project,' included in the 2010 metropolitan transportation improvement plan, could not be pursued, causing delays due to the selection of alternative routes and detailed route consultations.
DAEGANGWI confirmed the alternative route and resumed design work through the 'New Town Metropolitan Transportation Improvement Task Force (TF),' launched in February. Detailed design is scheduled to be completed by the second half of next year.
At the meeting, DAEGANGWI stated its intention to actively reflect local government and resident opinions in transportation policies for metropolitan transportation improvement. Chairman Kang Hee-eop said, "DAEGANGWI and Siheung City will continue to work closely together to improve metropolitan transportation," adding, "Starting with Siheung, we will accelerate efforts to ensure the early completion of the remaining concentrated investment projects."
