"Submarine Orders through Localization"… Hanwha Ocean Strengthens Local Cooperation in Poland

Hanwha Ocean announced on the 24th that it hosted an 'Industry Day' in Gdansk, Poland on the 21st and discussed cooperation plans for the Polish Orka submarine project with local companies.

The event was attended by major domestic partners related to Hanwha Ocean's submarine business, including Hanwha Systems, Hyosung Heavy Industries, KTE, NK Co., Ltd., and Kolon Deck Composite, as well as leading global submarine equipment manufacturers such as Babcock International from the UK and Gabler from Germany. Twelve Polish companies, including the state-owned defense company PGZ Group, also participated.

The Orka project is part of the Polish government's naval modernization initiative to acquire three new submarines for future naval operations. The top three companies are expected to be selected as early as July this year, with the preferred negotiation partner to be chosen in the first half of next year. Hanwha Ocean is currently competing with European submarine powerhouses from Germany, France, Sweden, and Spain in the Orka project.

Hanwha Ocean plans to provide the Polish Navy with advanced submarines capable of operating for more than 30 years, while promoting technology transfer and localization. The company also revealed detailed cooperation plans for technology and license transfer, including expanding local entry of submarine maintenance technology and key equipment suppliers, and establishing a support center locally to enable the Polish Navy to independently perform maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) in the future. Based on the domestically produced Jangbogo-III with an 80% localization rate, Hanwha Ocean aims to form 'Team Korea' with major domestic partners to secure the Orka project contract.

Jung Seung-gyun, Vice President and Head of Hanwha Ocean’s Special Ship Overseas Business Division, said, "This event marks the beginning of a long-term partnership that Hanwha Ocean aims to build with Poland through securing the Orka submarine contract." He added, "The Orka project will serve as a catalyst to further strengthen cooperation between Korea and Poland in economic, industrial, and naval development fields."
