Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province will operate various programs across the city from the 5th to the 11th of next month in celebration of the '3rd Korea Environmental Education Week.'
Environmental Education Week, which includes Environment Day (June 5), has been operated by the Ministry of Environment since 2022 to raise awareness of environmental conservation and promote environmental education during the week.
In 2022, the city was designated as the first Environmental Education City by the Ministry of Environment, and this year, marking the 30th anniversary of the Ministry's elevation, Yongin was selected as the venue for the Environment Day commemorative ceremony.
The ceremony will be held on the 5th of next month at Poeun Art Hall in Jukjeon-dong, Suji-gu. Poeun Art Hall is a representative successful case where an underground sewage treatment facility coexists with aboveground cultural and environmental facilities. Along with the ceremony, various performances such as a children's musical and choir by the Yongin City Art Troupe will be held.
At the Yongin Cultural Foundation Event Hall on the 7th of next month, an 'Environmental Educators Exchange Meeting' will be held to share environmental education cases from various fields including social, religious, and public sectors and discuss ways to link practice. The following day, a 'Campus Forum' hosted by the Environmental Education Society will take place.
On the 8th, a book concert themed on environmental education meeting books, music, and daily life will be held on the outdoor stage of Poeun Art Hall. Also, on the 8th and 9th, an Environmental Education Expo consisting of various environmental content and experience booths will be held outdoors at Poeun Art Hall.
The city has also prepared various self-organized events for citizens to participate in directly. On the 7th, the 'Yongin Love Environment Village Forum,' where environmentally specialized villages share carbon-neutral practice cases, will be held at the Yongin Cultural Foundation Event Hall. From the 7th to the 9th, 'Firefly Light Festival,' exploring biodiversity with ecological experts, will be held at Mapyeong Wetland in Cheoin-gu and the Climate Change Experience Education Center.
On the 10th, the Yongin Cultural Foundation will hold an environmental concert titled 'Beautiful World' at Poeun Art Hall. From the 28th of this month to the 15th of next month, an environmental exhibition titled 'Dear Earth' will be held at Poeun Art Gallery.
At the Childcare Comprehensive Support Center, an upcycling experience event for children will be held on the 8th of next month, and on the 5th, 7th, and 11th, the 'Suji Store,' where people share items they no longer need with others, will be held at Jukjeon Sports Park near the Suji Environmental Education Center.
In addition, the city plans to offer various online and offline environmental programs at libraries, Yongin Volunteer Center, Agricultural Technology Center, Forest Education Center, and Giheung Lake Park. Detailed information about the events can be found on the Yongin City blog and the 'Environmental Education Week' website.
A city official said, "We will continue to spare no support in creating environmental education infrastructure befitting an environmental education city and an eco-friendly ecological city."
