President Yoon Suk-yeol met with former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on the afternoon of the 23rd and said, "Through a strong South Korea-U.S. alliance and South Korea-U.S.-Japan cooperation, we will contribute to the promotion of peace and prosperity not only on the Korean Peninsula but also in the region and around the world."

Former Secretary Pompeo, who was in charge of North Korea-U.S. negotiations and Korean Peninsula issues during the Trump administration, visited Korea to attend the Asia Leadership Conference hosted by the Chosun Ilbo on the 22nd and 23rd.

President Yoon praised Pompeo’s efforts since his time as a member of the House of Representatives to enhance South Korea-U.S. relations, South Korea-U.S.-Japan cooperation, and North Korea denuclearization.

He also noted that the South Korea-U.S. alliance, upgraded based on nuclear capabilities, is expanding into an economic security and advanced technology alliance, and requested Pompeo’s continued interest and role, having served in key positions in both the U.S. Congress and administration.

Former Secretary Pompeo responded that under President Yoon’s leadership, who shares universal values with the United States, the South Korea-U.S. alliance is being further strengthened.

He added, "Regarding the North Korea issue, I look forward to closer cooperation between South Korea and the U.S., as well as among South Korea, the U.S., and Japan," and said, "I will continue to work to enhance understanding of the South Korea-U.S. alliance and the situation on the Korean Peninsula among the U.S. political and policy circles."
