Gwangju Buk-gu Council Visits Pyeongdume Wetland

The Safety and City Committee of the Buk-gu Council in Gwangju Metropolitan City visited Pyeongdume Wetland in Hwaam-dong, Buk-gu, which was registered as the first Ramsar wetland in Gwangju and the 26th in South Korea, on the 22nd during the 293rd extraordinary session.

Pyeongdume Wetland, located within Mudeungsan National Park, is a mountainous inland wetland naturally formed in fallow rice paddies. It is home to 786 species of diverse wildlife, including endangered species such as otters, leopard cats, martens, and fairy pittas, making it a site of very high scenic and ecological value.

Buk-gu and the Mudeungsan National Park Office officially began the Ramsar wetland registration process in April last year. Through resident briefings and agreements with environmental organizations, it was finally recognized as a Ramsar wetland on May 13.

After receiving a report on the progress and current status of the Ramsar wetland registration, the committee members toured Pyeongdume Wetland and urged, “As the ecological value has been internationally recognized, please devote great effort to management and conservation through cooperation with related organizations so that the wetland, an important asset for future generations, can be reborn as an eco-friendly space.”
