Greenfield, US Town of 2,000 Hit by Tornado
5 Dead, at Least 35 Injured
Powerful tornadoes that occurred across the central and southern United States have caused 5 deaths and at least 35 injuries, resulting in widespread damage.
On the 22nd (local time), AP News and CNN reported that a female driver was killed after her vehicle was caught in a storm and thrown off the road southwest of Greenfield, Iowa. Iowa authorities stated that including this woman, 5 people have died and at least 35 have been injured due to tornadoes that struck various parts of the region the previous day. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, so the number of injured may increase. Greenfield, a town with a population of about 2,000, was reported to be devastated overnight as houses, trees, and cars were destroyed by the tornado.

The U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) reported that an EF-3 tornado with wind speeds of 219 to 265 km/h likely occurred in Greenfield. Meteorologist John Porter explained that the tornado appeared to have remained over a range of more than 64 km and caused the worst damage since the EF-4 tornado (wind speeds of 267 to 321 km/h) that struck Mayfield, Kentucky, in December 2021.
In addition to Greenfield, at least 18 tornadoes were reported in Iowa the previous day. Furthermore, as the storm moved into Illinois and Wisconsin overnight, electrical equipment was damaged, causing power outages for about 50,000 households in the area.

Meanwhile, due to climate change, climate disasters such as tornadoes are becoming more frequent worldwide. In particular, the frequency of tornadoes in the United States is increasing, which is a concern. So far this year, more than 850 tornadoes have occurred across the United States. This is about 27% higher than usual, and there are forecasts that the annual record for the highest number of tornadoes may be broken.
