All Six Eco-friendly Container Ships Delivered

Competitiveness Reconfirmed in the Merchant Ship Market

HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (Shipbuilding Division CEO Yoo Sangcheol) held a simultaneous naming ceremony for two 5,500 TEU-class eco-friendly container ships at the Busan Yeongdo Shipyard on the morning of the 23rd.

HJ Heavy Industries Holds Simultaneous Naming Ceremony for Two 5,500 TEU Container Ships Naming ceremony event (6th from the right in the front row is Yoo Sangcheol, CEO of HJ Heavy Industries).

The event was attended by over 100 people, including representatives from the shipowner, classification society supervisors, and HJ Shipbuilding & Construction executives and employees. The two vessels were named "MACKENZIE" and "COLORADO" by the godmothers designated by the shipowner.

These ships are two out of a total of six 5,500 TEU-class container ships, worth $410 million, that HJ Shipbuilding & Construction secured orders for between October 2021 and March the following year.

With this, HJ Shipbuilding & Construction has successfully delivered all six 5,500 TEU-class eco-friendly container ships, which were considered a signal of the company's re-entry into the commercial ship market in 2021, once again proving its competitiveness as a traditional powerhouse in the container ship sector.

In particular, after holding naming ceremonies for the first and second ships in August last year, and for the third and fourth ships in February this year, the company completed construction and held the naming ceremony for the fifth and sixth ships on this day. This not only marked the successful completion of the project but also maximized construction efficiency such as productivity and profitability through the "repetitive construction effect" by building six ships with the same design and specifications in succession.

HJ Shipbuilding & Construction is demonstrating its technological prowess and competitiveness in the field of 5,500 to 9,000 TEU-class medium- and large-sized eco-friendly container ships, including methanol-ready, dual-fuel, and methanol-powered vessels, building on its past strengths in the container ship sector.

The container ships named at the ceremony are eco-friendly container carriers, 255 meters long and 37.3 meters wide, featuring the latest hull design and high fuel efficiency, which can reduce fuel consumption by about 40%. They are designed as methanol-ready vessels capable of transitioning to carbon-neutral operation.

An HJ Shipbuilding & Construction official stated, "With the successful delivery of all six eco-friendly container carriers through this simultaneous naming ceremony, we have lived up to the trust of the shipowner who placed the order," and added, "We will continue to enhance our competitiveness by accumulating advanced construction technologies for high-tech, high-value-added vessels, ranging from eco-friendly ships leading the carbon-zero era to various advanced naval vessels and special-purpose ships."
