Visits to Hydrogen-Based Facilities Including Hyundai Heavy Industries on the 23rd-24th
Taiwan Requests Cooperation on Promoting the 2050 Carbon Neutrality Roadmap
Ulsan City announced that officials from Taiwanese government agencies and companies related to hydrogen and offshore wind power will visit Ulsan on May 23 and 24 to observe and learn about the operation of Ulsan Hydrogen City and its major hydrogen-based infrastructure.
This visit was arranged at the request of Taiwanese government agencies and company officials seeking cooperation with Ulsan City for the development of their own hydrogen industry.
The delegation plans to network with related companies and discuss detailed directions for future projects, including overseas exports.
On the first day of the visit, the morning of the 23rd, the delegation will visit Aprotium Ulsan Plant 2, the largest hydrogen supplier in Korea, where Ulsan City officials will brief them on the current status of Ulsan Hydrogen City and provide a tour of the plant.
Aprotium, the largest hydrogen-specialized company in Korea, produces about 100,000 tons of hydrogen annually and supplies it to industrial consumers in the refining, petrochemical, and semiconductor sectors. The company is also pursuing clean hydrogen supply projects through ammonia cracking, having recently signed a technological agreement with Denmark's Topsoe on ammonia cracking technology.
In the afternoon, the delegation will visit HLB, the world's first company to demonstrate hydrogen-powered ships using eco-friendly energy, Hyundai Motor's Nexo hydrogen electric vehicle production base, the construction site of a domestic EV plant, and the Yuldong Combined Heat and Power Plant, which supplies heat and electricity using hydrogen fuel cells.
On the morning of the 24th, the group will visit the Ulsan Technopark Hydrogen Fuel Cell Demonstration Center, where Hanwoo Lee, Director of Energy Technology Support, will brief them on the center's current status. They will also explore Ulsan's hydrogen industry strategy, hydrogen production facilities, and visit a hydrogen ship charging station.
The hydrogen ship charging station was installed for the first time in the world to utilize the pier safely and efficiently, by directly supplying hydrogen through a newly built 2.4 km pipeline from Aprotium, instead of using storage methods.
In the afternoon, the last stop will be HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, which builds carbon-neutral eco-friendly ships with the world's largest shipbuilding capacity.
Cheng Chih-Wen, the head of the delegation, stated, "The Taiwanese government is investing national resources to develop the hydrogen economy. We need to learn from Ulsan City's experience and know-how in technology, supply, and infrastructure to produce, store, transport, and utilize hydrogen energy," explaining the purpose of the visit.
An Ulsan City official said, "We hope that Ulsan, a hydrogen city with unlimited potential as an international energy hub, and Taiwanese government agencies will expand cooperation in renewable energies such as hydrogen and wind power, and continue with various exchange projects as a result of today's visit."
The Taiwanese government is pursuing energy transition policies such as phasing out nuclear power and increasing the share of renewable energy, and has established a '2050 Carbon Neutral Roadmap' to promote the development of the hydrogen industry.
