Dobong-gu Conducts Major Gutter Cleaning for Flood Prevention... Over 1,500 Residents Join in Hard Work

"When the summer monsoon season approaches, I used to worry that cigarette butts would clog the storm drains, but I feel relieved and happy that the district office cleans together in advance like this."

On the morning of the 22nd at 10 a.m., Kim ○○, a resident of the shops near Changdong Station, who participated in the 'Clean Dobong Big Cleaning Day' storm drain cleaning held around Changdong Station in Dobong-gu, shared this impression.

Dobong-gu (District Mayor Oh Eon-seok) launched a large-scale storm drain cleaning campaign with residents around Changdong Station on the 22nd to prepare for summer flood damage.

This cleaning was promoted as part of the 'Clean Dobong Big Cleaning Day,' which is held on the fourth Wednesday of every month by the district office.

'Clean Dobong Big Cleaning Day' is a neighborhood event where employees and various resident cleaning groups gather around the 14 community centers in Dobong-gu to simultaneously clean the entire Dobong-gu area. About 1,500 local residents and employees participate every month.

This month, the activity focused on preventing flood damage caused by heavy summer rains by conducting a large-scale storm drain cleaning.

For effective cleaning, the district deployed a specialized suction dredging vehicle for storm drains and used an eco-friendly street sweeper (Glutton). The powerful suction dredging vehicle removed various debris such as cigarette butts, fine dust, and mud deposits from the storm drains, while the eco-friendly street sweeper eliminated cigarette butts inside the drains.

For small storm drains where equipment use was difficult, district employees and residents took direct action. Mayor Oh Eon-seok, employees, and residents opened storm drain covers and cleaned foreign substances using tongs and cold metal rods.

Along with the storm drain cleaning, the district also conducted Clean Day activities. Street cleaning vehicles focused on cleaning major arterial and general roads, and the Dobongsan 365 Clean Mobile Unit carried out environmental cleanup around the entrance of Dobongsan Mountain and promoted proper waste disposal methods.

Previously, the district established monthly focus plans tailored to the characteristics of each neighborhood to promote 'Clean Dobong Big Cleaning Day.' They also organized autonomous cleaning groups using professional organizations and designated responsibility sections by group (organization) to build a sustainable environmental cleanup system.

'Clean Dobong Big Cleaning Day' is scheduled to continue until November this year. Interested residents can apply and participate through their local community centers.

Mayor Oh Eon-seok of Dobong-gu said, "The district is making various efforts to create a pleasant and safe urban environment. 'Clean Dobong Big Cleaning Day' is one of them," and added, "We ask for the interest and participation of all residents in the 'Clean Dobong Big Cleaning Day,' held on the fourth Wednesday of every month."

Dobong-gu has a total of 17,758 storm drains. The district plans to complete the first dredging and cleaning of all storm drains by the end of this month. For areas where storm drains frequently clog, such as subway stations and commercial areas, and flood-prone lowlands, dedicated personnel will be hired to conduct regular patrols and cleaning.

Mayor Oh Eon-seok said, "The district has established and is implementing 17 detailed measures in four major areas?flood control, heatwave, safety, and others?to prevent various disasters and safety accidents during the summer. We will do our best to ensure that residents suffer no damage this summer."
