The extension of the Gyeonggang Line, jointly promoted by Yongin City and Gwangju City in Gyeonggi Province, has been found to have sufficient feasibility according to a preliminary feasibility study.

Yongin City announced on the 21st at the 'Final Report Meeting on the Preliminary Feasibility Study for the Gyeonggang Line Extension Railway Project,' held at Gwangju City Hall, that the benefit-cost ratio (B/C) of this project was finally confirmed to be 0.92.

The Gyeonggang Line extension is a project to connect 37.97 km of double-track railway branching from Gyeonggang Line Gyeonggi Gwangju Station to Cheoin-gu Idong and Namsa-eup, where the Yongin Advanced System Semiconductor National Industrial Complex and the semiconductor-specialized new town, Idong Public Housing District, are being developed.

The total project cost is expected to be 2.3154 trillion KRW, and this project received an evaluation confirming its feasibility with a B/C of 0.92 based on the recent study results.

The city explained that the study focused on predicting transportation demand resulting from the construction of six semiconductor production lines by Samsung Electronics at the Advanced System Semiconductor National Industrial Complex and the development of the Idong District with 16,000 households, and on devising the optimal plan to enhance urban competitiveness through an integrated railway network connection.

Earlier in February, based on the interim study results, the two cities officially requested the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to include the Gyeonggang Line extension as a new general railway project in the '5th National Railway Network Construction Plan.'

Hwang Jun-gi, the 2nd Deputy Mayor of Yongin City, said, "The Gyeonggang Line extension project, which has been discussed for a long time, has gained momentum due to the Advanced System Semiconductor National Industrial Complex and the Idong New Town. Since road and railway infrastructure are essential for the smooth movement of talents working in the industrial complex, we will strive to ensure that the Gyeonggang Line extension project is reflected in the government’s plan."

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to announce the final results of the 5th National Railway Network Construction Plan in July next year after conducting research and public hearings until April.
