Changwon Special City Certified as Special City for Couple Culture on World Couple's Day

Ordinance Enactment, Couple Sculpture and Dogae Couple
Family Park to Promote Family-Friendly City

On the 21st, Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam received the '2024 Special City for Couple Culture Certificate' and a letter of appreciation at the National Assembly ceremony commemorating the 30th anniversary of World Couple's Day, in recognition of its achievements in promoting couple culture.

The certificate and letter of appreciation were awarded as a result of Changwon City and its citizens and merchants enacting an ordinance in 2013 to commemorate Couple's Day, which began in 1995, and changing the name of the traditional market to 'Dogye Bubu Market' to revitalize the traditional market. In 2023, the city also established couple-themed sculptures and the Dogye Bubu Family Park.


The '2024 World Couple's Day National Assembly Commemoration Ceremony and Year of Overcoming Low Birthrate Proclamation' was hosted by the World Couple's Day Committee, the Korea Family Ministry Association, and the Haenggarae Movement Headquarters, marking the 30th anniversary of World Couple's Day and the 17th anniversary of its designation as a national commemorative day. About 300 awardees and their families, as well as committee officials, attended the event, where awards such as Couple of the Year, Dasan Couple Award, and International Couple Award were presented.


Hong Nam-pyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City, expressed his gratitude in his acceptance speech, saying, "I would like to thank Pastor Kwon Jae-do and everyone involved for their dedication to the happiness of couples and families over the past 30 years. We will continue to work hard to make our city a safer and happier place for children and all types of families."


Meanwhile, May 21st, designated as the national commemorative day for Couple's Day, originated at Sunbogum Seongmun Church, 350-3 Dogye-dong, Uichang-gu, Changwon City. The date was chosen to symbolize 'the day two become one' in May, the month of family, and has been celebrated since 1995, initiated by Pastor Kwon Jae-do.
