Doosan Enerbility announced on the 21st that it has won the fuel conversion project for a Chilean thermal power plant commissioned by Engie Energia Chile S.A., a private power generation company.
This project involves converting the fuel of Chile's 375 MW IEM (Infraestructura Energenica Mejillones) power plant from coal to natural gas. Doosan Enerbility plans to supply and install its self-developed burners and auxiliary equipment at the power plant to convert it into a natural gas power plant that produces the same amount of electricity as the existing plant.
The power plant will operate using the existing generation method until 2025 in accordance with Chile's environmental regulations and the Engie Group's carbon neutrality policy. After a short construction period of about six months, it is expected that carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions will be reduced by approximately 40% and nitrogen oxides (NOX) by about 70% compared to the current levels.
Seungwoo Son, Head of Power Service BG at Doosan Enerbility, said, "Fuel conversion of power plants is an economical low-carbon power generation solution that minimizes plant downtime compared to new construction and reduces costs by maximizing the use of existing facilities. We will do our best to carry out the project to ensure stable power supply for the client."
Doosan Enerbility has been continuously carrying out fuel conversion projects, including signing a memorandum of understanding last year with three Vietnamese power operators to promote eco-friendly fuel conversion projects.
