Promotion of Alley Commercial District Revitalization Project
Daegu City announced on the 21st that it has finalized the selection of six locations for the second phase (stabilization) of the 2024 Alley Economic Zone Creation Project, known as the 'Alley Commercial District Recovery Support Public Contest Project.' The selected areas are Namsandong Musical Instrument Alley, Manpyeong Alley, Sangyeok Herb-ro Yeonam Alley, Maejun-ro Cherry Blossom Street, Seongseo Keimyung University Rodeo Street, and Uiheung Eoseulleong-gil.
This public contest project will invest 50 million KRW per commercial district to discover the unique characteristics of each alley and dynamically promote various projects necessary for the recovery of the alley commercial districts.
Previously, in April, Daegu City selected the Gyeongbuk University North Gate commercial district and Bullo Flower Complex for the Alley Commercial District Vitality Support Project, which provides 200 million KRW per district.
Looking at the project plans for each selected commercial district: Namsandong Musical Instrument Alley, formed in the 1960s and home to local performing artists, will focus on promoting itself as Daegu's representative musical instrument alley by developing a unique brand and character, and producing an alley guide map this year.
Manpyeong Alley, which is transforming into a multicultural commercial district due to a large number of immigrants, will host the Manpyeong World Festival where immigrants and local residents can enjoy together. The district will also discover unique shops and provide customized consulting to utilize its unique characteristics for commercial recovery.
Sangyeok Herb-ro Yeonam Alley will collaborate with the youth mall in Sangyeok General Market to discover and nurture star shops, and operate a stamp tour program for visitors to explore the alley. Maejun-ro Cherry Blossom Street will focus on promoting the district through the Maejun-ro Festival, production of video and promotional content, and operation of the Alley Commercial District Marketers program.
Seongseo Keimyung University Rodeo Street will establish the district's identity through commercial district analysis, brand development, and street design consulting. It also plans to expand publicity using social networking services (SNS) and to host a Rodeo Festival in collaboration with university clubs, engaging both youth and local residents.
Uiheung Eoseulleong-gil Alley in Gunwi County will develop storytelling and an alley brand utilizing the area's abundant tourism and cultural resources, and, in cooperation with the local Confucian school, will hold the Eoseulleong-gil Alley Festival to strengthen the competitiveness of the commercial district based on the region's strengths and unique features.
Daegu City's Alley Economic Zone Creation Project aims to discover and organize alley commercial districts, support community activities, and implement both software and hardware projects tailored to the demand and growth stage of each district. The project strengthens the unique characteristics of each alley and supports revitalization. Since its launch in 2021, recovery and vitality support projects have been implemented in 23 alley commercial districts as of last year.
An Joongon, Director of Economic Affairs for Daegu City, stated, "Daegu City plans to actively support the selected commercial districts in discovering their unique characteristics and implementing various projects that highlight these features, thereby raising the profile of these districts both domestically and internationally and helping them grow into specialized local alleys."
