Transition to Future City... Busan City to Launch Full-Scale Redevelopment of Aging Planned Urban Areas

Special Act Enforced, Basic Plan for Old Planned City Maintenance to Be Established by End of May

Residents' Understanding and Local Companies' Interest Increase... Briefing Session with Ministry of Land and Residents

Busan City will officially launch the Old Planned City Redevelopment project by commissioning a basic plan study for the redevelopment at the end of May.

The city will promptly prepare the necessary procedures in line with the enforcement of the "Special Act on the Redevelopment and Support of Old Planned Cities" (effective April 27), and will begin the basic plan study for the redevelopment of old planned cities at the end of May.

Through this basic plan, the city will present plans for ▲the spatial scope of old planned cities ▲infrastructure maintenance ▲step-by-step implementation of redevelopment projects ▲designation of leading districts, among others.

The target areas for the project are "regions developed through housing site development projects or similar, with an area of over 1 million square meters and more than 20 years since development." For areas where individual redevelopment projects alone cannot solve fundamental issues such as self-sufficiency, systematic and metropolitan-level redevelopment will be promoted at the city level.

The designated areas are: ① Haeundae 1, 2 (3 million m², completed in 1997) ② Hwamyung 2 (1.45 million m², completed in 2002) ③ Mandeok, Hwamyung, Geumgok area (2.4 million m², completed 1985?1996) ④ Dadae area (1.3 million m², completed 1985?1996) ⑤ Gaegum, Hakjang, Jurye area (1.2 million m², completed 1987?1999).

Before the full-scale implementation of the redevelopment project, the city will hold a resident briefing session together with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on May 23 to address residents' questions and raise community interest.

The briefing session will be held at City Hall and Haeundae Cultural Center at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively. By holding the sessions in easily accessible locations, the city aims to increase interest among local residents and businesses in the old planned city redevelopment.

The session will include ▲an explanation of the special act and related policies by the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements ▲an introduction to the operation of the Future City Support Center by Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH), the supporting agency ▲an overview of the city's old planned city redevelopment project.

The city plans to collect a wide range of opinions from residents during the briefing session, reflect them in redevelopment policies, and cooperate with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and other relevant local governments to promote a swift and orderly transition to a future-oriented city.

Lim Kyungmo, Director of Urban Balanced Development for the city, stated, "With this briefing session as a starting point, both citizens and the public sector will take the first step together in creating the vision for Busan's next 100 years," and added, "We will continue to communicate with residents to ensure the successful implementation of the old planned city redevelopment project."
