'Garden City' Yeongdeungpo-gu Yeouido Hangang Park 'Mugunghwa Garden' Established

Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it has signed a business agreement with the Life Forest Association and created the ‘Mugunghwa Garden’ in the riverside green area of Yeouido district along the Han River to establish a healthy urban ecosystem.

The ‘Mugunghwa Garden’ was jointly created by the district and the Life Forest Association with private funding support from the Export-Import Bank of Korea. Near the garden, visitors can also find the Mugunghwa Hill, where about 3,000 Mugunghwa trees are currently planted.

Additionally, to offer beautiful scenery throughout all four seasons, the district planted 10 large trees including double-flowered cherry trees, 922 shrubs such as golden rain trees and bottlebrush trees, and 2,000 groundcover and herbaceous plants including sedum and hairy beard grass.

In particular, this Mugunghwa Garden embodies the ‘strength’ and ‘eternal prosperity’ symbolized by the Mugunghwa, a national emblem that has endured through long hardships. The lawn within the garden, designed in the shape of the infinity symbol (∞) under the concept of ‘Land of Infinity,’ expresses the symbolism of eternity, prosperity, and the endlessly blooming Mugunghwa. Visitors can relax and enjoy picnics on this wide lawn and stroll along the Mugunghwa walking path, appreciating the diverse trees and plants.

The Mugunghwa Garden was officially opened on May 20 with a grand ceremony attended by Yeongdeungpo District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon, representatives from the Life Forest Association, and the Export-Import Bank of Korea, and has since been opened to the public.

Meanwhile, the district is accelerating the creation of forests and gardens throughout the city to provide healing spaces for residents to enjoy a healthy daily life and to practice carbon neutrality in response to climate change. Currently, these efforts are linked with corporate social responsibility activities of private companies. The district has signed a business agreement with the Export-Import Bank of Korea and the Life Forest Association to work together on creating the ‘Forest of Hope.’

Yeongdeungpo District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon stated, “I hope the Mugunghwa Garden will serve as an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of our national flower, the Mugunghwa, and foster pride. Following the Mullae-dong Flower Garden and Dorim-dong Charm Garden, the Yeouido Mugunghwa Garden symbolizes the infinite possibilities of realizing ‘Garden City Yeongdeungpo.’ We will continue to create oasis-like gardens that serve as healing spaces for residents, building a Yeongdeungpo where nature and people live in harmony.”
