Preventive Activities for Creating a Safe Society... Part of the National Safety Grand Transition

Mokpo Maritime Police Station (Chief Kwon Oh-seong) announced on the 20th that it conducted safety inspections of passenger and vehicle ferries around Heuksando and Jindo in its jurisdiction to prevent maritime accidents in preparation for the increase in users during the peak season.

This inspection is a preventive activity to create a safe society and is part of the "National Safety Grand Transition," in which the government, public institutions, and all citizens conduct safety inspections on facilities at risk of disasters and accidents during a designated intensive inspection period every year.

This year, Mokpo Maritime Police formed a mobile inspection team with public and private experts, including the Korea Maritime Transportation Safety Authority, and has been inspecting the safety management status of passenger and vehicle ferries since the 22nd of last month, coinciding with the spring holiday season.

The main inspection targets include 12 passenger and vehicle ferries over 5 tons with a service life exceeding 20 years and accident history in the past three years, passenger ferries with a capacity of over 200 people, and vehicle ferries capable of carrying vehicles that have been found violating regulations in the past three years, as well as 15 piers within the jurisdiction.

A Mokpo Maritime Police official stated, "Through thorough inspections, we will promptly address any deficiencies in maritime safety prevention at passenger and vehicle ferry facilities, and the maritime police will take the lead in ensuring a safer and cleaner sea."

Meanwhile, Mokpo Maritime Police have so far conducted inspections on six passenger and vehicle ferries and 10 piers around Heuksando and Jindo Shimi Port, and plan to carry out thorough inspections on the remaining targets by the 21st of next month.
