Gyeonggi Province is launching the distribution and operation of reusable cups at coffee shops around the ‘Gyeonggi Convergence Town Office’ (Iui-dong, Yeongtong-gu, Suwon-si), where the Gyeonggi Provincial Government is located.
Since April, Gyeonggi Province has been producing reusable cups with QR codes (Matjanha Cups) to reduce single-use items within the office building. Starting in May, a demand survey was conducted targeting coffee shops near Gyeonggi Convergence Town, and reusable cups have been introduced and operated at five coffee shops, including ‘Custom Coffee Gwanggyo Branch’.
As the use of reusable cups expands, Gyeonggi Province has installed separate return collection bins within Gyeonggi Convergence Town and established a circulation system to ensure smooth collection, washing, and hygiene inspection.
Additionally, the province plans to discover new stores near Gyeonggi Convergence Town to introduce reusable cups and apply this system to delivery apps in the future, enabling more residents to use reusable cups at coffee shops.
Seo Jin-seok, Director of the Resource Circulation Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "Many stores want to participate in solving environmental issues, and this opportunity can serve as a chance to improve awareness of hygiene issues related to reusable cups, convenience, and waste reduction, achieving three benefits at once. We will strive to distribute reusable containers in various locations so that more people can experience them."
