The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 17th that it will hold the Special Committee on Aging Planned Cities for the first time. The committee is a statutory body established under the "Special Act on the Maintenance and Support of Aging Planned Cities," which came into effect on the 27th of last month, to set the Ministry's basic policies and local governments' basic plans.
The committee consists of 30 members, including the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport as the chairperson, 13 government members, and 16 private members.
The first committee meeting will establish operational rules such as meeting convening procedures, advisory body management, and agenda submission. Afterwards, it will discuss the progress and future plans of aging planned cities as agenda items.
On this day, the Ministry will address not only the first-generation new towns but also aging local cities as agenda items for the maintenance projects of aging planned cities. According to an internal survey conducted by the Ministry from March to April, more than 50 aging planned cities nationwide, besides the first-generation new towns, will establish basic plans by 2025. Accordingly, the Ministry will visit local governments aiming to establish basic plans this year and hold a total of six resident briefings in places such as Busan and Incheon.
In June, a consultative body among the Ministry, metropolitan, and basic local governments for aging planned cities nationwide will be formed. It will be regularly operated as a channel to listen to regional opinions on government support and necessary matters.
Also, the progress on the "Plan for Selecting Leading Districts in First-Generation New Towns and the Direction of Relocation Complex Supply" will be reported on this day. Subsequently, at the meeting scheduled for the 22nd between the Ministry, Gyeonggi Province, and heads of first-generation new town organizations, the scale and criteria for selecting leading districts will be finalized and disclosed.
Park Sang-woo, Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, said, "Since the enactment of the special law in December last year, the enforcement of the law in April this year, the first special committee meeting, and the upcoming meeting with heads related to leading districts scheduled for the 22nd, the government is doing its best to ensure the swift progress of maintenance for aging planned cities. In addition to the announced support measures such as the Future City Fund, we will discover additional support plans to ensure the successful maintenance of aging planned cities."
