A man in his 30s causes fatal wrong-way crash while drunk... sentenced to 2 years in prison in first trial

A 30-year-old broadcaster who caused a fatal accident by driving in the wrong direction while intoxicated and colliding with an oncoming car was sentenced to imprisonment.

According to the legal community on the 16th, Judge Hong Yun-ha of the Seoul Southern District Court Criminal Division 14 sentenced 34-year-old male Yoo Mo, who was indicted for violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment, etc. of Specific Crimes (reckless driving causing death) and the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving), to two years in prison. Yoo was also known to have been fined for drunk driving in 2017.

Yoo is accused of driving in the wrong direction while intoxicated and hitting an oncoming car on a road in Guro-gu, Seoul, at 1:33 a.m. on November 25 last year. At the time of the wrong-way driving, Yoo's blood alcohol concentration was 0.113%, and the car's speed was 94 km/h. The driver of the oncoming car was immediately taken to the hospital but died from a skull fracture and other injuries.

The court stated, "Despite having a prior record of a fine, the defendant drove a vehicle while intoxicated again, ultimately causing the victim's death, making severe punishment commensurate with the gravity of the crime inevitable." However, the court also noted, "The defendant admitted to the crime, pledged not to reoffend by selling the car, and the bereaved family does not wish for the defendant to be punished."
