On the morning of the 16th, the flames that broke out at Yongdu Neighborhood Park Environmental Resource Center (47-4 Yongdu-dong) were completely extinguished, and Dongdaemun-gu (District Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) began managing the aftermath of the incident.
As the fire was brought under control, the acrid smoke disappeared, and the nearby area regained clear skies.
The district explained that the 'Han River Basin Environmental Office Chemical Safety Management Team' measured the concentration of harmful substances in the surrounding air at one-hour intervals and confirmed that there were 'no abnormalities.'
The 'Seoul Metropolitan Government Health and Environment Research Institute' also monitored the surrounding air quality and reached the same conclusion.
Regarding the cause of the fire, it is presumed to be overheating of the deodorization equipment on the third basement floor (used to remove odors generated during food waste processing), but the exact cause will be determined together with the fire department.
There were concerns that waste disposal might be disrupted due to the fire at the Dongdaemun-gu Environmental Resource Center, but cooperation has been arranged to process waste at nearby facilities, so no inconvenience to residents is expected.

Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, expressed gratitude to the firefighters who worked tirelessly to extinguish the fire and stated, “We will create a comprehensive disaster safety report on this incident, thoroughly analyze it, and conduct training so that each person can promptly perform their roles according to the disaster response manual when situations arise.” He emphasized that the district will ensure a faster and more systematic disaster response.
The district plans to conduct a full inspection of underground facilities in the area to implement preventive measures against fires and other accidents.
