The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 16th that it will hold the "42nd Seoul Metropolitan Government Architecture Awards" contest until the 18th of next month.

'Seoul City Architecture Award' Contest... Applications Accepted Until June 18

The Seoul Architecture Awards began with the 1st event in 1979 and this year marks the 42nd edition. It is the most prestigious award in the field of architecture in Seoul, recognizing those who have contributed to architectural culture and technological advancement.

The contest targets buildings and remodeled buildings located in Seoul that received usage approval within the last three years, from 2021 to 2023.

This year’s judging will focus on design completeness, public value, improvement of citizens’ quality of life, advancement of architectural culture and technology, and future orientation.

The final awards will be given to one Grand Prize winner, two Excellence Award winners, six Merit Award winners, and at least three Special Award winners (a total of 12 or more). The Special Awards will be selected after reflecting citizens’ opinions and discussions by the Architecture Awards judging committee.

The judging committee is composed not only of architects but also producers (PDs), journalists, and critics from various socio-cultural fields who address issues related to architectural culture discourse.

To increase citizens’ interest and understanding of architecture, public presentations by architects who designed the nominated works will be held during the judging process.

The winners will be selected through on-site evaluations and public presentations in July. The public presentations are scheduled to take place at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) Art Hall. Citizens will be able to share their opinions and communicate via YouTube live streaming and video recordings.

The award ceremony and exhibition of the winning works will be held at the 16th Seoul Architecture Culture Festival in October this year. The festival will include ▲the 42nd Seoul Metropolitan Government Architecture Awards ceremony and exhibition ▲a special exhibition of the 41st Seoul Metropolitan Government Architecture Awards Grand Prize winner (LG Art Center) ▲citizen participation programs ▲and related exhibitions.

Award winners will receive special benefits such as a curated exhibition of their works at the Seoul Architecture Culture Festival, preferential selection as external members related to Seoul architecture (such as the Architecture Committee, Public Architects, and other advisory members), and eligibility to apply for limited-design competitions for Seoul city-commissioned construction projects. The Grand Prize winner will additionally receive support to hold a “Previous Year’s Grand Prize Special Exhibition” at the next Seoul Architecture Culture Festival.

Kim Jang-su, Director of Housing Supply Planning at Seoul Metropolitan Government, said, "This year’s Seoul Architecture Awards will focus on realizing the public value of architecture and discovering future-oriented buildings with excellent design. Through the award-winning works, we hope to share how the experiences of architects, building owners, and users are reflected in the buildings at the Seoul Architecture Culture Festival, making it a meaningful time to rediscover the values of architects and building owners."
