"Surprising Event: Ghanaian Nationality on Birthday"
Legendary American singer and songwriter Stevie Wonder has acquired Ghanaian citizenship, the British BBC reported on the 14th (local time).
On the day before his 74th birthday, Stevie Wonder received a certificate of nationality and a birthday cake shaped like the Ghanaian flag from Nana Akufo-Addo, the President of Ghana, at the Presidential Palace in Accra, Ghana. He said, "It is very surprising to gain Ghanaian nationality on my birthday."
Born in Michigan, USA, Stevie Wonder had previously expressed his desire to live in Ghana, citing that his Black ancestors came from West Africa.
Ghana has long advocated "Pan-Africanism" and has granted residency rights to descendants of Africans living abroad. Since then, more than 300 descendants of Africans have acquired Ghanaian citizenship.
