Yangcheon-gu Awards 8 Proud Residents Including Hangul Teacher Hwang Yunsuk

Yangcheon-gu (Mayor Lee Gi-jae) announced that it selected eight residents who have become role models through dedication and service for regional development as recipients of the ‘2024 Yangcheon Resident Award’ and held an awards ceremony at the Yangcheon Digital Media Center on the 14th.

Now in its 31st year, the Yangcheon Resident Award was established to express gratitude for the efforts of residents who contributed to the development of the local community and to honor their achievements. Earlier, the district received nominations for candidates in various categories from residents and institutions throughout March, conducted investigations into their merits, and finalized the awardees through written and discussion evaluations by the Resident Award Selection Committee.

The awardees by category are ▲Education: Hwang Yoon-sook ▲Volunteering: Lee Yeon-soo ▲Regional Development: Yang Soon-nyeo ▲Resident Harmony: Lee Jae-soon ▲Good Deeds: Min Byung-chul ▲Environmental Protection: Lee Nam-wan ▲Culture & Arts: Jeon Sun-ok ▲Sports: Kim Jong-ha.

In the education category, Hwang Yoon-sook was selected for her customized learning method for elderly people who do not know Hangul, having produced 77 graduates out of 150 students since 2017. Notably, Hwang created a heartwarming impression by proving that learning has no age limit, awarding the first-ever diploma in life to a 90-year-old oldest student in 2021.

In the volunteering category, Lee Yeon-soo was recognized for leading the ‘Model Youth Scholarship Program’ to prevent the repetition of hardships she experienced in childhood when she had to stop her studies due to difficult family circumstances. She also took the lead in crime prevention patrols and youth guidance activities in vulnerable and high-crime areas, spreading the spirit of volunteerism by helping marginalized neighbors such as the homeless, earning praise as a model of inclusive and sharing leadership.

Additionally, Yang Soon-nyeo contributed to regional development with an active attitude through activities in the Residents’ Autonomy Committee and the Korean Red Cross; Lee Jae-soon fostered harmony and bonds among residents by serving as a communication channel between the public and private sectors; Min Byung-chul, as a public veterinarian of Yangcheon-gu, worked to promote a mature companion animal culture and improve welfare for pets of vulnerable groups; Lee Nam-wan devoted himself to environmental cleanup and quarantine volunteer work while protecting the village for a long time; Jeon Sun-ok, a transmitter of Gyeonggi Minyo, National Intangible Cultural Property No. 57, strived to spread local traditional culture; and Kim Jong-ha was honored for contributing to the revitalization of sports such as soccer and other community sports.

The district held the awards ceremony on the 14th and presented plaques of merit to the awardees. As an additional privilege, the achievements of the recipients will be engraved in the ‘Resident of the Year Award’ exhibition hall on the first floor of the district office.

Lee Gi-jae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, said, “I sincerely thank the awardees who have quietly dedicated themselves to the local community and district administration development in unseen places. Inspired by their passion and affection, we will do our best to make Yangcheon-gu an even better place to live.”
