Hong Jun-pyo Supporting Yoon on Prosecutor Personnel Controversy: "Not Bulletproof but a Real Man's Duty"

"Even If Criticized, One Must Behave Like a Man"

Amid opposition parties' recent criticism of the prosecution's key personnel reshuffle as a "Kim Geon-hee shield" appointment, Hong Joon-pyo, Mayor of Daegu, defended it, saying, "It's not a shield but at least the duty of a real man."

On the 14th, Mayor Hong questioned on his Facebook, "Can someone who cannot protect his own woman protect the lives and property of 50 million people?" He continued, "If it were you, would you throw your woman to a pack of hyenas just to keep her in place while the investigation into whether she committed a crime is ongoing and unclear? Try putting yourself in their shoes," he pointed out.

He said, "Look at how former President Roh Moo-hyun dealt with the issue when his father-in-law's leftist background became a problem during his candidacy. That was not shielding but at least the duty of a real man. Even if criticized, one must behave like a man," he added.

Mayor Hong also targeted President Moon Jae-in, saying, "Some people are given a presidential aircraft and even a solo tour of the Taj Mahal in India, causing tens of billions in national treasury losses, yet they are not punished and live well." Previously, in November 2018, First Lady Kim Jung-sook traveled alone to India using the South Korean presidential aircraft without accompanying then-President Moon Jae-in, sparking controversy.

Meanwhile, as Lee Chang-soo (Judicial Research and Training Institute class 30) was appointed Chief Prosecutor of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, criticism continued from the Democratic Party of Korea. Park Chan-dae, the Democratic Party floor leader, said at a party strategy meeting held at the National Assembly that morning, "Lee Chang-soo, the new Chief Prosecutor of Seoul Central District, led the Seongnam FC case and stood at the forefront of opposition suppression as part of the pro-Yoon (pro-Yoon Seok-yeol) faction," adding, "This is a signal that they intend to shield Mrs. Kim."

On the other hand, the People Power Party stated that they could not agree with the opposition's claims. Sung Il-jong, Secretary-General of the People Power Party, appeared on SBS Radio's 'Kim Tae-hyun's Political Show' and said, "(The opposition's claim of investigation cover-up) is something we cannot agree with," adding, "Just because they say to cover up the investigation (of Mrs. Kim), does that mean it will be covered up?"
