Broker who aided military exemption through 'false epilepsy' sentenced to 3 years in prison in second trial

On the 14th, the Criminal Division 2-3 of the Seoul Southern District Court (Presiding Judges Kim Seong-won, Lee Jeong-gwon, Kim Ji-suk) sentenced Kim, who was detained and indicted for violating the Military Service Act, to three years in prison and a fine of 217.6 million won, the same as the first trial, at the appellate sentencing hearing.

Four others indicted for evading military service also had their first trial sentences upheld, ranging from one year in prison with two years of probation to one year and six months in prison with three years of probation.

The court stated, "There have been no changes in circumstances that would affect sentencing since the original judgment, and it is difficult to see the original sentence as too light or too heavy and therefore unjust."

Kim opened a military service consultation cafe on a portal site in February 2020 and was arrested and indicted in January last year on charges of conspiring with military service obligors to fabricate epilepsy symptoms, obtain medical certificates, and submit them to the Military Manpower Administration to receive military service reductions until November last year.
