April Smartphone User Sample Survey
YouTube, KakaoTalk Followed by Instagram
Instagram was found to be one of the smartphone applications (apps) used the longest by Koreans last month, following YouTube and KakaoTalk, according to a recent survey.
App and retail analysis services WiseApp, Retail, and Goods (WiseApp) announced on the 14th that, based on a sample survey of Korean smartphone users, the app with the longest usage time in April was YouTube, with a total usage time of 102.1 billion minutes.
Next in line were KakaoTalk with 32.5 billion minutes, Instagram with 20.9 billion minutes, Naver with 20 billion minutes, TikTok with 6 billion minutes, Naver Webtoon with 4.9 billion minutes, and X (formerly Twitter) with 4.8 billion minutes.
Notably, Instagram surpassed Naver for the first time since WiseApp began compiling mobile app statistics in March 2016, ranking third.
According to WiseApp’s survey, Instagram’s monthly usage time has steadily increased from 15 billion minutes in April last year to 17.6 billion minutes in July, 17.2 billion minutes in October, and 20.7 billion minutes in January this year.
Instagram is a photo and video-centered social networking service (SNS) operated by Meta.
It gained popularity particularly among Generation Z (those born from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s) following the launch of 'Reels,' a feature for creating and posting short videos, in 2021.
A WiseApp representative commented on Instagram surpassing Naver in usage time, stating that it "reflects the increasing time Koreans spend on SNS."
