International Symposium in Seoul on the 16th
Renowned Foreign Experts Invited in Large Numbers
The Cultural Heritage Administration is inviting renowned international experts to present a blueprint ahead of the launch of the National Heritage Agency on the 17th. This will take place at an international symposium held on the 16th at the Westin Chosun in Jung-gu, Seoul.
The theme is "The Significance, Effect, and Future of the K-Heritage System." The symposium will review the national heritage system from the perspectives of cultural, natural, and intangible heritage.
The event will see the participation of Choi Eung-cheon, head of the Cultural Heritage Administration, Han Kyung-gu, Secretary-General of the UNESCO Korea Committee, as well as representatives from international organizations and prominent figures from domestic and international academia. The keynote speech will be delivered by Lee Eun-ha, director of the National Heritage Policy Institute, discussing the national heritage system and its new future.
Presentations will be divided into sections on culture, nature, intangible heritage, and digital heritage. Each will examine the K-Heritage system from their respective perspectives and suggest directions for its advancement. Speakers include Susan McIntyre-Tamwoy, Vice Chair of ICOMOS; Rodney Harrison, professor at University College London (UCL); Tim Badman, director at the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN); and Eric Champion, former chair of UNESCO’s Cultural Heritage Visualization.
In the subsequent comprehensive discussion, cultural heritage committee members Lee Kwang-pyo, Shin Hyun-sil, Kim Sam-gi, and professor Yoo Jung-min from the Korean Traditional Culture University will lead presentations to encourage open exchange of opinions. A Cultural Heritage Administration official stated, "This is an opportunity to showcase Korea’s status in the heritage field," adding, "We will widely promote the establishment of the comprehensive 'K-Heritage System' for protection and management, and disseminate the excellence of this leading heritage management system."
