The Presidential Committee for National Integration, directly under the President, reported on policy achievements related to small business owners, youth housing, and the elderly on the 13th, and announced plans to continue discussing policy support tasks for scientists, North Korean defectors, and migrant workers in the first half of this year.

On the 13th, the National Integration Committee held its 12th plenary meeting and performance report session at the Yongsan Presidential Office, presided over by President Yoon Suk-yeol. Since its launch in July 2022, the committee has been operating 22 special committees to address various social conflict issues and review policy alternatives.

The National Integration Committee emphasized that it has set this year's theme as "Together," and plans to discuss national integration tasks that can include not only socially vulnerable groups but all citizens.

In particular, it explained that in the first half of this year, policy development will continue focusing on the special committees "Approaching with Inclusive Finance," "Together with Science and Technology," and "Together with North Korean Background Residents."

The National Integration Committee stated, "We are exploring ways to create an environment where scientists can conduct research freely with pride and support North Korean defectors to become self-reliant members of our society."

Additionally, the committee is reviewing proposals to eradicate illegal gambling to protect future generations and find solutions for migrant workers to coexist as neighbors.

The National Integration Committee explained, "In the second half of this year, we plan to broadly address not only policy proposals that can resolve individual conflicts but also fundamental conflict structures in our society such as economic polarization and topics that affect the future lives of the majority of citizens."

At the performance report session, major achievements derived from the special committees on small business owners, inclusive finance, youth housing, and the elderly, which have been discussed since the second half of last year, were also reported.

The "Enhancing the Self-Reliance of Small Business Owners" special committee proposed the establishment of an internet-only specialized bank for small business owners to help them secure necessary funds at reasonable interest rates in the market, as well as expanding TV sales channels for small business owners.

Also, the "Better Youth Housing" special committee proposed customized policy alternatives tailored to the life cycle of youth, the construction of dormitories for university students using closed urban school sites, and support measures to enable rental-specialized startups to participate in supplying youth housing facilities.

The "Society Where the Role of the Elderly is Alive" special committee reported on the introduction of a customized medical model for the elderly that allows elderly patients with multiple diseases to receive one-stop services without having to visit multiple medical departments, the spread of voluntary continued employment, and the expansion of university education opportunities for the elderly.

Kim Han-gil, chairman of the National Integration Committee, said, "Like this year's theme 'Together,' we will find answers alongside the people and with the people so that Korea can become one through national integration beyond regions, classes, generations, and genders."
