Ulleung-gun Receives Presidential Citation at Sea Planting Day Commemoration Ceremony

Creating Marine Forests and Diverse Fish Habitats Along the Coast of Ulleungdo

Ulleung-gun, Gyeongbuk received the Presidential Citation at the ‘12th Sea Planting Day’ event held on May 10 at the Daejam Hall of Pohang City Hall, Gyeongbuk, hosted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and organized by the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency.

This award ceremony recognizes institutions that have made significant contributions to the restoration of marine ecosystems. Ulleung-gun was highly acknowledged for its efforts in attracting coastal ecosystem restoration projects along the East Coast, creating fishery resources, contributing to national policy projects through active promotion of the necessity of fishery resource creation to visitors of Ulleung-gun, and expanding public consensus, thereby receiving the Presidential Citation.


Nam Han-kwon, the county governor, said, “Sea Planting Day is an important day to plant seaweed in the ocean to create sea forests and to reflect on the preciousness of the sea. Ulleung-gun will strengthen post-management to ensure the well growth of the already established sea forests, and actively strive to allow the general public and students to experience the importance of the sea through the nation’s first visible sea forest using the Cheonbu Underwater Observatory.”


‘Sea Planting Day’ is a legally designated commemorative day on May 10 every year to raise public awareness of the importance of protecting underwater ecosystems, the seriousness of marine desertification, and to expand recognition and participation in the value and achievements of sea forest creation.


The ‘12th Sea Planting Day’ event was attended by about 500 people, including Kang Do-hyung, Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, Lee Kang-deok, Mayor of Pohang, Nam Han-kwon, Governor of Ulleung-gun, nationwide fishermen’s organizations, and local residents.
