Bringing 'Reusable Containers' to the Festival Site Achieves 3 Tons Waste Reduction Success
Boseong-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that the ‘47th Boseong Dahyang Festival,’ held over five days from the 3rd to the 7th, achieved the effect of reducing 3 tons (t) of waste and approximately 14.3t of greenhouse gases by hosting a festival without disposable products.
To create an eco-friendly festival without disposable items, Boseong-gun provided tea sets at the free tea tasting area and the cultural center, and used reusable cups at the green tea foot bath experience site so visitors could comfortably enjoy refreshing green tea.
Additionally, reflecting the characteristic of the Boseong Dahyang Festival where tea (cha) can be enjoyed anywhere, a traditional tea set rental service was operated to allow visitors to immediately drink the tea they made themselves through experiences such as ▲roasting tea, ▲blending tea, and ▲making Boseong tea.
All 12 restaurants within the festival grounds served all food in reusable containers. Customers who used reusable containers returned them to the respective restaurants, and the used tableware underwent daily high-temperature and high-pressure washing, drying, and sterilization before reuse.
By using reusable containers, Boseong-gun estimates that about 3 tons of waste were reduced compared to last year’s festival. This corresponds to a reduction of 14.3t of carbon dioxide and 99kg of fine dust, equivalent to the amount of greenhouse gases absorbed in one year by approximately 800 30-year-old pine trees.
Furthermore, an unmanned collection machine was pilot-operated at the festival site, which refunded 10 won per transparent PET bottle or can deposited, promoting the value of resources and the importance of separating recyclables.
A Boseong-gun official stated, “Based on the data secured on the recovery rate and usage status of reusable containers at this festival, we will expand the use of reusable containers in future events.”
