Gangnam-gu Mayor Joseongmyeong Visits Tokyo Shibuya Ward Office... Plans for Complex Government Building

The Gangnam-gu delegation (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) visited the Shibuya Ward Office in Tokyo, Japan, on May 9 to establish new strategic hubs for the 8th term of the elected administration, including the Administrative and Cultural Complex Town.

Shibuya Ward opened a new ward office and community center in 2019 by promoting a redevelopment project jointly between the public and private sectors without using the ward budget. The ward office, ward council, community center, and apartment complexes are horizontally integrated, making it a model for complex government buildings. Additionally, to explore ways to revitalize the areas around Gangnam-gu’s station zones, the delegation visited Toranomon Hills and Azabudai Hills, representative compact city areas in Tokyo.

On the 10th, the delegation will visit Toshima Ward Office, another complex government building in Tokyo, to meet with Mayor Miyuki Takagi. Opened in 2015, the Toshima Ward Office is Japan’s first public-private complex government building, vertically integrating the ward office, ward council, commercial facilities, and apartment complexes.

Next, they will visit Nikken Sekkei, a global architectural firm famous for designing the Trade Tower in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu. There, they plan to hear from Kiyoki Okumori, General Director of the Urban Division, about development plans and progress for the Shibuya district.

Jo Seong-myeong, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, stated, “We are inspecting successful cases of complex government buildings to establish the Gangnam-gu Administrative and Cultural Complex Town,” adding, “We will build an administrative and cultural complex town with an observatory and park on the SETEC site, a key transportation hub where Yeongdong-daero and Nambusunhwan-ro intersect, to serve as a new growth engine for Gangnam-gu.”
