18.6km Round Trip 4-Lane → 6-Lane Expansion
Alleviation of Chronic Traffic Congestion and Demand from Industrial Complex Development Plans
Daejeon City announced that the 'Honam Expressway Branch Expansion,' a pledge project of the 8th local government administration, has been selected as a preliminary feasibility study project by the Ministry of Economy and Finance's 3rd Fiscal Evaluation Committee in 2024.
The Honam Expressway Branch is a route included in the national main road network's north-south axis 4. It is a project to expand the section passing through Daejeon, from Hoedeok JC to Seodaejeon JC, with a total length of 18.6 km, from 4 lanes to 6 lanes by 2033, at a cost of 369.7 billion KRW.
Currently, it is a section with habitual congestion during commuting hours and weekends, and it is expected to become even more congested when the Seoul~Sejong Expressway opens in 2025.
Additionally, this project is necessary to meet various demands such as the establishment of industrial complex development plans in Daejeon and to improve mobility between the Honam and Chungcheong regions by expanding the Daejeon Outer Ring Road section (Hoedeok JC~Seodaejeon JC).
Choi Jong-moon, Director of the Transportation and Construction Bureau of Daejeon City, said, "The Honam Expressway Branch expansion was a project that failed the preliminary feasibility study once in 2017, but this time it passed as a pledge project of the 8th local government administration of Daejeon and a presidential regional pledge. We will closely cooperate with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Korea Expressway Corporation to contribute to alleviating traffic congestion within Daejeon and promoting balanced regional development."
