'Art Busan 2024,' the largest art trading market in Korea in the first half of the year, will be held for four days from the 9th to the 12th at BEXCO in Busan. This year marks the 13th edition of the event, with 129 galleries from 20 countries around the world participating.
This year's Art Busan features a special exhibition that highlights trends in the Asian art market. Professor Jun Yeonhwa from Hongik University has been appointed as the director, presenting a total of nine exhibitions centered on 'Solidarity in the Asian Art Scene' and 'Contemporary Women Artists.'
In particular, the exhibition focuses on female artists representing the first generation of contemporary Asian art. The 'HERSTORY' section, themed around female artists of Asia's first generation of contemporary art, will showcase a museum-level exhibition featuring 10 artists and over 60 works in one space. Visitors can encounter representative works by East Asian artists such as Kusama Yayoi, Jung Kangja, and Xiao Lu, alongside iconic Western female artists like Cindy Sherman and Jenny Holzer.
Following this, 'Focus Asia: China' sheds light on the flow of the Asian art scene through prominent Chinese artists based in Beijing. The exhibition introduces works by notable Asian artists such as Yan Lei, Ma Shuqing, and Tan Ping, and notably features a large-scale series by Zhu Jinshi, a master of contemporary Chinese art, measuring 4.8 meters wide and 1.8 meters high.
The highlight of the art fair, the 'Main Section,' features 118 leading galleries from Korea and abroad presenting works by world-renowned contemporary artists. International Galleries will exhibit works by prominent overseas artists such as Anish Kapoor, Candida H?fer, and Jean-Michel Othoniel, alongside masterpieces by masters like Park Seo-bo and Ha Chong-hyun. PKM Gallery will focus on the works of Koo Jeong A, the representative artist of the Korean Pavilion at the 2024 Venice Biennale. The 'Future' section, introducing promising emerging artists and galleries, includes nine participants such as Gallery Unplugged, offering fresh curation for collectors seeking new faces.
Famous overseas galleries such as Peres Projects, Tang Contemporary Art, Whitestone Gallery, and Pearl Lam Galleries will also meet domestic collectors and audiences with innovative works reflecting the latest trends.
The FUTURE section, an artist discovery support program, showcases fresh and innovative works by young artists and emerging galleries expanding their presence based on distinctive planning capabilities.
In addition to the gallery-focused Main Section, various side events attract attention. The CONVERSATIONS program invites domestic and international art experts to introduce major issues in the art world and engage in discussions with artists and art discourse. This year, 13 global art experts and artists participate as speakers, conducting a total of six sessions.
Jung Seok-ho, Director of Art Busan, said, "The art fair, known as the most beautiful four-day market in the world, brings excitement and anticipation to many art lovers," adding, "We hope visitors enjoy the essence of contemporary art and the diverse scenes of Busan at Art Busan, a place for creative relaxation."
