On the 8th, Pohang City held a kick-off meeting in the city hall's mid-sized conference room to promote the development project of a large-capacity turquoise hydrogen supply system technology.

This meeting was held to establish a communication network for the development of turquoise hydrogen production technology and to swiftly secure a leading position in the government’s national projects.


At the meeting, experts from industry, academia, and research institutes including POSCO Research Institute, Pohang Institute of Industrial Science and Technology, Handong Global University, Korea University, and related companies shared the progress of each institution and discussed strategic directions for attracting new projects.


Turquoise hydrogen is a clean hydrogen produced by thermally decomposing natural gas (methane) into hydrogen and solid carbon without emitting carbon dioxide, gaining attention as a practical alternative for large-scale clean hydrogen supply.


Additionally, the byproduct solid carbon can be applied in various industries such as tires, carbon black, graphite, and graphene, which is expected to reduce hydrogen production costs and secure excellent economic feasibility.


Pohang City, which is promoting the hydrogen city project with POSCO?the largest user of clean hydrogen and solid carbon needed for hydrogen reduction steelmaking?is evaluated as the optimal site for the development and demonstration of turquoise hydrogen technology.


Moreover, through excellent infrastructure such as POSCO Research Institute and Pohang Institute of Industrial Science and Technology, and linkage with projects like the hydrogen city creation project and hydrogen fuel cell cluster construction project, synergy effects can be generated, making this project essential for securing continuous growth momentum in the hydrogen industry.


The city held a business meeting in March with the Korea Agency for Infrastructure Technology Advancement (KAIA), Pohang Institute of Industrial Science and Technology, and Gyeongbuk Province, and actively pursued project leadership by participating in the Hydrogen and New Energy Society conference in April to understand turquoise hydrogen trends and attend planning presentations.


Kwon Hyuk-won, Director of the Job and Economy Bureau, said, “This meeting is the first step toward attracting public projects, and we will do our best to proactively secure turquoise hydrogen production technology capable of large-scale processes,” adding, “We will actively strive to lead the creation of a clean hydrogen industry ecosystem by establishing a turquoise hydrogen value chain from production to supply.”
