Japan Fukushima Contaminated Water 5th Ocean Discharge Completed... "6th Discharge Within June"

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) announced on the 7th that it has completed the fifth ocean discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (referred to as "treated water" by the Japanese government), according to Kyodo News.

According to the report, TEPCO discharged approximately 7,800 tons of contaminated water into the sea from the 19th of last month until this day. Although the discharge was interrupted for about 6 hours and 30 minutes due to a power outage caused by cable damage during work at the Fukushima Daiichi site on the 24th of last month, the discharge operation was completed as scheduled.

Seawater samples taken near the discharge outlet on the 3rd of this month showed tritium levels exceeding the detection limit, but the tritium concentration was 29 becquerels (Bq) per liter (L), which is far below TEPCO's threshold of 700 Bq/L used to determine whether to halt discharge.

Since the start of the Fukushima Daiichi contaminated water discharge in August last year, a total of approximately 39,000 tons has been released as of this day. TEPCO plans to discharge 54,600 tons of contaminated water over seven times during the 2024 fiscal year, from April this year to March next year. The amount discharged per session remains the same at 7,800 tons. Kyodo News reported that "the sixth discharge is expected to take place between May and June."
