Buk-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, is presenting a special art exhibition to honor the noble spirit of the May democratic martyrs on the occasion of the May 18 Democratic Movement Memorial Day.
According to Buk-gu on the 7th, the ‘5·18+1 Special Invitational Exhibition’ will be held for 11 days from that day until the 17th at the Jami Gallery in Buk-gu.
The 5·18+1 Special Invitational Exhibition was organized to invite artists who record and remember the May 18 Democratic Movement, using their works as a medium for each resident to reflect on the stories of the May 18 history, including martyr Yoon Sang-won, and to engrave the spirits of the numerous democratic martyrs of Gwangju in their hearts.
This special invitational exhibition features ‘60 photographs of the May 18 Democratic Movement by artist Han Jin-su,’ who has long documented the movement including martyr Yoon Sang-won, as well as invited artists ▲ Chu Hyun-kyung (5·18 as heard from others) ▲ Jeong Min-su (5·18 as known as a child of a merit recipient) ▲ Yoo Da-eun (5·18 learned through education), each presenting their own way of remembering the May 18 story, along with ‘one video’ containing an interview with artist Han Jin-su.
Also, on the 7th at 4 p.m., an opening ceremony will be held with participants including the Yoon Sang-won Memorial Association, Gwangju Jeonnam Democratic Movement Comrades Association, Deulbul Martyrs Memorial Association, and Buk-gu Office officials, featuring explanations of the exhibited works and commemorative photo sessions.
The special invitational exhibition is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., admission is free, and for more details, inquiries can be made to the Jami Gallery in Buk-gu or the Culture and Arts Division of Buk-gu Office.
Moon In, the mayor of Buk-gu, said, “I hope this special invitational exhibition will be a meaningful occasion to reflect on the spirit of sacrifice and significance of the Gwangju Democratic Uprising, which marks its 44th anniversary,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to ensure that the May spirit, which upheld the values of democracy and human rights, is firmly passed on to future generations.”
