Proposing Industrial Utilization Plans for Native Plant Resources in Korea
The National Honam Bioscience Resource Center under the Ministry of Environment (Director Ryu Tae-cheol) announced on the 7th that it received two Excellent Presentation Awards for Young Scientists and one Excellent Poster Presentation Award at the ‘2024 Spring Conference of the Korean Society of Plant Resources’ held at the Baekdudaegan National Arboretum.
The Korean Society of Plant Resources, established in 1985, conducts academic activities related to the conservation, management, and industrial use of plant resources, facilitating research knowledge and information exchange. The conference was held from the 25th to the 26th of last month under the theme ‘Conservation and Utilization of Plant Resources and the Role of Arboretums,’ with a total of 77 research presentations.

Senior Researcher Song Hyun-kyung presented on the topic ‘Exploring the Therapeutic Potential of Plant Extracts in Various Disease Models,’ introducing results verifying the atopic dermatitis inhibitory effects of San-oipul, a native Korean plant, and proposed sustainable utilization methods for biological resources.
Senior Researcher Lee Hwa presented on ‘Comparison of Secondary Metabolites Following Various Elicitor Treatments for Endemic Plants.’ She proposed efficient artificial cultivation conditions that can amplify useful components of native Korean plants such as scopoletin and squalene, establishing ways to commercially utilize limited resources.
Through these presentations, Senior Researchers Song Hyun-kyung and Lee Hwa received the ‘Excellent Presentation Award for Young Scientists.’
Researcher Kim Ji-su presented research results on ‘The Effect of Island and Coastal Biological Resources on Alleviating Hair Loss Caused by Ultraviolet Rays in Human Dermal Papilla Cells,’ earning the ‘Excellent Poster Presentation Award.’
Choi Kyung-min, Head of the Island Biological Convergence Research Division, stated, “The National Honam Bioscience Resource Center will continue efforts to conduct ongoing research for the conservation of island and coastal biological resources and the utilization of useful biological resources.”
