"The mother is once again singing along with her child from behind today. It is a moment to witness the greatness of love."
This is a post by comedian and singer Lee Jeong-gyu, who saw a mother kneeling behind her disabled daughter, supporting her so she wouldn't collapse while singing.
Kookmin Ilbo introduced a story on the 5th about Lee Jeong-gyu’s recent SNS post. He shared a video recounting a reunion with a mother and daughter he first met five years ago at a singing contest event for people with disabilities. The girl he met at the 2019 event dreamed of becoming a singer.
The girl took the stage relying on a rehabilitation aid device. Her mother knelt behind her, holding her to prevent her from falling while she sang. The mother curled her body as much as possible so she wouldn’t be seen by the audience and quietly sang along with her child.
Lee Jeong-gyu, who filmed and posted the video, wrote, “The mother seemed to sing along to encourage the child’s trembling voice. She knelt behind so the child could be the star of the moment, hiding her own body. I don’t know how many times I cried while hosting the event.”
He revealed that he recently met the mother and daughter again at an event five years later. Lee said, “The girl has not lost her dream of becoming a singer and took the stage,” sharing a scene of the two on stage together. In the video, the child had grown significantly and was about the same height as her mother, who now stood behind her, wrapping her waist instead of kneeling as she did five years ago.
The video has been viewed 3.8 million times as of the 5th, five days after posting. More than 130,000 people pressed ‘heart’ to support the mother and daughter. Netizens commented, “I see God in the mother’s figure,” “The mother’s knees are so precious,” and “This scene reminds me of the saying that God made mothers because He cannot be everywhere.” Especially, some left comments offering kind help, saying, “I want to help with vocal training.”
Meanwhile, Lee Jeong-gyu debuted as a comedian in MBC’s 18th public recruitment in 2009 and has been active since 2012 as a member of the band ‘Deliver.’
