Powernet Supplies ESS LFP Battery Packs to Morocco

Powernet announced on the 3rd that it has shipped the initial production of ESS LFP battery packs in collaboration with Chinese CEL, a specialist in LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries, to participate in the ‘Smart Multi-Microgrid R&D Capacity Building Demonstration Project’ led by the Moroccan government.

The ESS battery packs supplied by Powernet this time are part of South Korea’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) project and will be linked with MASEN (Moroccan Agency for Solar Energy), a large-scale renewable energy supplier in Morocco, with a capacity of 215KWH x 2 units. They are scheduled to be installed in the Ouarzazate area located in the Dr?a-Tafilalet region of Morocco.

A Powernet official stated, “As smart grids have emerged as a concrete solution for energy demand efficiency, the global market has grown to about 5 billion USD as of last year, and the demand is gradually expanding. Morocco has a roadmap to build a renewable energy environment by introducing advanced smart microgrid technology (a small-scale smart grid system that can self-supply electricity in small areas) with the goal of converting 52% of its total power generation to renewable energy by 2030.”

He added, “The Moroccan government is firmly committed to expanding high-quality electricity supply to the entire region through the establishment of power grid infrastructure in the Ouarzazate area. Powernet will strengthen partnerships with collaborators to expand participation in ODA projects centered on Africa and developing countries by supplying LFP battery packs equipped with BMS (Battery Management System) solutions that have secured stability and reliability in the global market.”

Meanwhile, Powernet is focusing on fostering the LFP battery business as a future core industry. In fact, it is concentrating its core capabilities on entering the battery market, including the development of B2C auxiliary batteries and adapter-integrated products applied with LFP batteries, as well as participation in demonstration projects for exchangeable battery packs for electric two-wheelers.

A company representative explained, “Since signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Chinese CEL in 2019, we have been steadily preparing for business entry, and visible results are expected within this year.”
