Seoul Eunpyeong-gu (District Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) announced on the 3rd that it will actively identify youth preparing for independence who need support and provide tailored services accordingly. Youth preparing for independence refers to young people who have left child protection facilities or foster homes and are becoming independent. They typically leave these facilities and must become independent upon turning 18.
The district establishes individualized independence plans through personal counseling, close case management, and resource linkage, and continuously supports necessary resources through monitoring.
Youth preparing for independence tend to strongly feel alone and avoid forming social networks with others. Therefore, the district focuses on providing personalized support to help them achieve psychological stability and become a source of emotional strength. Among approximately 190 youth preparing for independence residing in Eunpyeong-gu, about 30 have been counseled so far, and the district plans to expand the program to reach 110 this year.
The Eunpyeong Youth Preparing for Independence Center offers counseling by social workers and psychological counselors. They accompany youth during the process of finding a new home, assist with real estate contracts, and provide emergency housing costs if necessary. Counseling also supports career exploration and job search activities. Additionally, the center consistently provides deposit support, individual financial counseling, psychological and emotional support, and mentoring with seniors.
District Mayor Kim Mi-kyung stated, “We will continue to actively support young people taking their first steps into society so they can stand independently in good health,” and added, “We ask for the community’s ongoing interest and support.”
