Eunpyeong-gu Hosts Special Exhibition 'The Unknown Lee Ho-cheol'

Eunpyeong-gu (Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) announced that it will hold a special planned exhibition titled "The Lee Ho-cheol We Didn't Know" at the Eunpyeong History Hanok Museum until September 18.

Novelist Lee Ho-cheol is a writer who wrote about the pain of division, reflections on the era, and insights into human life. He lived in Bulgwang-dong, Eunpyeong-gu for over 50 years, cultivating his literary world.

This exhibition is a special planned exhibition where visitors can learn about the author and his works by solving 13 questions about Lee Ho-cheol, a master of division literature. The exhibition is divided into three parts: Part 1 "The Lee Ho-cheol We Didn't Know," Part 2 "The Lee Ho-cheol We Need to Know," and Part 3 "The Lee Ho-cheol We Must Remember."

Part 1 consists of ▲Lee Ho-cheol through Photos ▲Lee Ho-cheol through Questions ▲Lee Ho-cheol Known to the World. Visitors can explore Lee Ho-cheol's life through photos and learn about his works and life by solving seven questions.

Lee Ho-cheol's personal belongings, plaques, and the first edition of his first novel collection Nasang are exhibited. Visitors can also encounter various works translated into world languages, including his representative work Namnyeok Saram Buknyeok Saram (Southerners and Northerners), Darajineun Saldeul (Worn-out Flesh), Talhyang (Leaving Home), and Nasang.

Part 2 introduces three selected works from over 250 works by Lee Ho-cheol. It features ▲his debut work Talhyang ▲his most cherished work Nasang ▲and Keun San (Big Mountain), set during his time living in Bulgwang-dong, along with six related questions to solve.

Notably, Nasang was included in the 2011 College Scholastic Ability Test, and since then, many of Lee Ho-cheol's works have appeared in EBS CSAT workbooks and other materials.

Part 3 introduces ▲Lee Ho-cheol-gil (Lee Ho-cheol Road) ▲Lee Ho-cheol Unification Literature Award ▲Lee Ho-cheol Book Concert Hall to honor Lee Ho-cheol, who lived in Bulgwang-dong for a long time. In 2016, Eunpyeong-gu designated a 522-meter road in front of 3 Bulgwang-ro 14-gil as the honorary road "Lee Ho-cheol-gil" to recognize his contributions to literary development.

In 2017, the "Lee Ho-cheol Unification Literature Award" was established to commemorate Lee Ho-cheol's literary activities and his spirit of wishing for unification, selecting one grand prize and one special prize winner annually. Lastly, the Lee Ho-cheol Book Concert Hall is being created as a space to highlight Lee Ho-cheol's literary world and enjoy various music and art performances, aiming to open in October.

Especially during the preparation of this exhibition, an unpublished handwritten manuscript titled Norumossi was discovered. It is a light conte that reveals Lee Ho-cheol's daily life and human side, and its content is being disclosed for the first time. This work is scheduled to be published in a literary magazine in the summer.

Until the 31st, admission is free during the Museum and Art Museum Week. For more details, please contact the Eunpyeong History Hanok Museum by phone or refer to the museum's website.
